Response to Recent Statements made by celebrity poet/ singer Ntsiki Mazwai

The African National Congress Women's League takes note of recent statements, made by celebrity poet/singer Ntsiki Mazwai, who recently hurled distasteful comments about women and young women leading structures in the African National Congress on her twitter page which also appeared in the Sunday World online.

We are concerned at the recent comments that one of our very own artist Ntsiki Mazwai has uttered in her own personal stance about women supporting the ANC in quote are "idiots" and that "ANC merit happens in the bedroom."

May we remind Ms. Mazwai that the ANC Women's League denotes its role on the objectives to defend and advance the rights of women, both inside and outside the ANC, against all forms of national, social and gender oppression and to ensure that women play a full role in the life of the organisation, in the people's struggle and in national life.

Much to our dismay, we had hoped that SHE, not only as a woman poet and singer, would assist the women's league and any other association in favour of leading women's objectives in a more educational and constructive form. We had hoped SHE also would comprehend her role as a "celebrity" and surround herself with the amount of stance in being a role model for many women who may look up to her .

Despite some of our very own personal views, when we arm ourselves into positions of leadership, we assume a role that leads thousands of many who are voiceless. We should always take heed of the self-sacrifice in putting others before our very own views and beliefs and the very least learn to understand the diversity of democratic culture we lead.

A democracy that has allowed for many to receive a better life for all in abundance, filled with opportunities that have benefitted the majority after the 20 years led by the African National Congress despite race, gender, or any socio-economic conditions.

In your position, Ms Mazwai, one should have the knowledge that clearly stipulates how the majority of women especially in the public sector have met the threshold of leading strategic positions based on the merit of intellect and not through your so called "panties".

Your statement is not only an utter disappointment to those whom you refer to as "idiots" but paints a very worrying picture of how you think women can only achieve their goals, which goes to show the lack of conscience and clarity you copiously possess about the growth of women in this country.

This Year which is dedicated as the Year of women, we still have many challenges that women face in a course to fight Gender Inequality, even after the 59 years of women celebrating the emancipation clenched in our hands. Now is not the time to look down at one another and throw insults at each other but allow opportunities that would strengthen the very society that has always fought and stood for gender equality.

When our foremothers marched in such a critical, difficult and trying time of trauma. We should always remember as women in positions of leadership that multitudes from diverse circumstantial and school of thoughts, put aside who they were as personages but stood united, fearless and stern for the freedom we rightfully endure today.

Ours is not to judge and crucify but remind a cadre of our course as women entrusted to lead many generations before us towards a united, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous socio-economic society.
