ANCWL is Saddened by 44 Deceased during Road Accidents in the Eastern Cape Province

The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) is deeply saddened and concerned by the death toll in the Eastern Cape province that has left 44 casualties and at least nine (9) alive, with critical injuries.

The first incident involved a bus that plunged into a river in East London near Willowvale and Butterworth. The driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and overturned, killing 35 passengers including 16 females, 15 males and 4 children, leaving 9 people with injuries.

The other accident involved nine people who were killed when a minibus taxi overturned on the R61 between Cradock and Graaff Reinet in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"We are deeply concerned by such tragedy that has left many families in sorrow and in distress. Words nor deeds may not fill the gap that has been caused by this disaster," said ANCWL Secretary General Meokgo Matuba

The ANCWL has always centred its beliefs on a united course not to stand aside and shy away from any sorrow or cause of pain whatsoever, taking lead from the courageous and fearless women of Crossroads, gallant heroines who fought against pass laws, and who contributed immensely to the liberation we have today.

We will ensure that more methods to safeguard the lives of our people are put to strategy and implementation, to warrant proper safety and security as a human right to all.

We thank all emergency units, the South African Police Service and community members for their swift rescue assistance and ensuring that all bodies are identified for relevant members of families.

The ANCWL would like to send its deepest and rooted condolences to the families of the bereaved, and note that a loss of life cannot be compared to any other form of wrong.

May their Souls Rest in Eternal Peace.
