THE TREE OF LIBERTY HAS FALLEN
12/05/2015

ANC in Bokone has sadly learned of the passing of our struggle icon and our own Seaparankwe Mama Ruth Segomotsi Mompati who died in the early hours of this morning. At the time of her death Mama Ruth was on a routine medical checkup in one Cape Town hospital.

For the days of her struggle life we as the young generation in the ANC have been living under the shelter of this giant tree of liberty which has just fallen. We are comforted by the fact that the roots of this tree of liberty remain firm in the ground and will live on.

Mama Ruth as a member of the ANC Women's League National Executive Committee, became involved in the 1952 Defiance Campaign and helped form the Federation of South African Women. She was among the organisers of the historic women's anti-pass law march to the Union Buildings on August 1956, alongside Helen Joseph, Lillian Ngoyi and Gertrude Shope.

Upon returning from exile, she took part in the negotiations which brought an end to the apartheid regime. She served the democratic government under the presidency of Comrade Mandela and became Member of Parliament and later in 1996 she became an ambassador of South Africa to Switzerland.

Just recently the ANC in Bokone Bophirima rewarded her for her loyalty and the role she played in the ANC by purchasing a new vehicle for her. She was also honoured with a statue which is situated in a park facing Naledi Municipal building where she was a mayor.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public.

May her soul rest in peace.
