OPEN LETTER TO THE EDITORS
RONNIE KASRILS AND THE MAIL AND GUARDIAN MISGUAIDED DIAGNOSE ON ANC VOTE
09/05/2014
Ishmael Mnisi

Cde Ronnie Kasrils and the Mail and Guardian no vote call for the African National Congress was misguided; oppositionist, undemocratic and above all unethical.

Cde Ronnie Kasrils, my leader and comrade (sic) call has not disappointed me personally, but it is totally against the ANC Constitution, Rule 25 in particularly that deals with the Code of Conduct of members. As a leader of the ANC, cde Ronnie should have known better about the importance of discipline as contained in the ANC membership pledge. What would be prudent for Cde Ronny and those that works with him is to openly and unreservedly apologise to the ANC, the Alliance and supporters for his unfortunate, dangerous and antagonistic call against the ANC.

Equally It is no excuse that the Mail and Guardian as an 'independent' medium should act so irresponsible as part of the media and openly call for South Africans not to cast their votes for their beloved revolutionary organisation, the African National Congress (ANC). The vote by the majority of South Africans is a total rejection to this opportunistic call.

South Africans know the founding foundations, principles and government delivery achievements of the African National Congress from its genesis in 1912 to date. From its genealogy, the ANC has placed the agenda of the majority of this people affront, particularly the poor and the dispossessed.

In 1994 the ANC led government ensured that it becomes a champion of these pro-poor policies, as espoused in the ready-to-govern document and subsequent policy directives, including the Reconstruction and Development programme.

Yesterday's vote of confidence for the ANC confirms what the people of South Africa in their diversity agree with the ANC Elections Manifesto, which states:

  • Builds and inclusive economy that creates jobs
  • Transform rural areas
  • Ensure decent living conditions and sustainable human settlements
  • Improve and expand education and training
  • Ensure quality health care for all
  • Expand comprehensive social security
  • Fight corruption and crime
  • Build a united nation and promote social cohesion.

As the five democratic elections draws to an end, regardless of individuals vote choices, the ANC will leave up to its character which is determined by the nature of the core tasks that confront the national democratic revolution (NDR) in our country in any specific historical time.

The ANC's character is the foundation of a true (as opposed to a superficial and cosmetic) non-racialism. The ANC rootedness among the historically oppressed, and its determination to focus on the struggle to overcome the legacy of minority rule, is not based on an ethnic or racial exclusivism. On the contrary, the ANC has always promoted non-racialism and the idea that South Africa is a home for all its peoples. Any genuine democrat and any genuine patriot in our country, white or black, should appreciate that the central democratic and nation-building tasks of our situation relate directly to the struggle against the historical racial oppression of the majority of our people.

As these elections draws to an end, I hope the cde Ronnie will do an honourable gesture and simply apologise to the ANC.

For the Mail and Guardian sponsors, owners and sympathises they must do an in-depth inquiry into their neutrality and ethical conduct as a family of the forth estate, that lives up to media ethics and principles, above all, their patriotism.
