ANC STATEMENT ON THE RESTORATION OF PEACE AND STABILITY IN LEKWA TEEMANE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY
12/04/2014
Dakota Legoete

The African National Congress in North West is pleased with the restoration of peace and stability in the Lekwa Teemane Local Municipality following protests in Boitumelong and Coverdale Townships near Bloemhof.

This tranquillity is a result of tireless efforts by the ANC, government and communities through their representatives.

The ANC-led government together with communities agreed on a restorative and collective process to address the community concerns.

Amongst the decisions arrived at, is the appointment of an audit firm to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration in the municipality. A report will be presented within six weeks. Government will forward the request on the re-demarcation of Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality to the Municipal Demarcation Board.

As the ANC we maintain our earlier position that the Lekwa Teemane Local Municipality is not at the verge of collapse and the call to invoke the provisions of Section 139 (1) C of the Constitution is undesirable at the moment.

In all efforts to bring stability in the area, the role played by law enforcement agencies is commendable and appraisable. They indeed lived up to their true character of guaranteeing personal and public peace and stability.

We thank the communities for heeding to the ANC call. They called-off the protest and allowed learners to go to school, including the safety of all residents in the area.

The ANC leading from the front, will work with our communities to monitor the situation in Leekwa Teemane because together we move South Africa forward.
