ANC NW OUTRAGED AND CONDEMNS EFF INSULTS AT THE HOUSE OF ANC PROVINCIAL CHAIRPERSON
30/03/2014
Dakota Legoete

The ANC in North West is outraged and strongly condemns the provocative insults and demeanour of EFF members, allegedly led by their leader Julius Malema, outside the private resident of the ANC Chairperson in North West, Cde Supra Mahumapelo. This incident happened on Friday, 28 March 2014, around 18h05.

This group gathered at one of the entrances to the house when they hailed insults and chanted derogatory slogans to the chairperson. This mob behaved violently, like hooligans who were demon posed and ready to masticate their thirst. They behaved like hyenas ready to take-up their next prey.

They intimidated the chairperson's children who were at home at the time of this ordeal.

Their behaviour borders on the personal safety and privacy of the chairperson and his family. It also infringed on the Electoral Code of Conduct of political parties participating in elections, particularly, Section 99: 9 (Prohibited conduct) (1) a;b. Their criminal conduct is deemed inimical to the conduct of free and fair elections because their behaviour sought to instil fear and disenchantment of the part of the ANC and its leadership.

Clearly, the EFF did not acquaint themselves with the Electoral Legislation and the IEC pledge for political parties participating in elections. What is more concerning to the ANC is that this mob has been led by their senior leaders.

The ANC is in consultation with its legal team to seek duly legal remedies on the matter. The ANC will also report this occurrence to the South African law enforcement agencies and the IEC.

We also make an appeal to government to step-up the personal security of the chairperson, his family and property, because we believe that his personal safety and that of his family is under threat.

Consistent with our electoral pledge sign on the 26th of March 2014, in Mahikeng, we restate our pledge that we will abide and uphold the Electoral Act that governs Political Parties' conduct during elections and that we will ensure that we observe and consult the IEC structures entrusted to implement the Electoral Act in any matter of concern to the ANC and as and when a need arise. This includes legal and monitoring of the entire election process.

We will do so in terms of the spirit of the South African Constitutions, that safeguards the political freedoms of individuals and parties to participate in a democratic and fair political discourse, the elections being part of it.

Finally, we will ensure that we work with all political parties with integrity and respect their rights as contained in the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
