Mahumapelo: Top ANC leaders on a death 'hit list'

African National Congress (ANC) Bokone Bophirima Provincial Chairperson, Supra Mahumapelo, has for the first time spoken out about several death threats he's been receiving that he said are politically linked.

Mahumapelo addressed a media conference at the ANC's provincial headquarters Getrude Mphekwa House in Mahikeng on Thursday afternoon.

The ANC Chairperson, who is also Premier of Bokone Bophirima Provincial Government, named other senior ANC leaders that he said were also being targeted for assassination.

The names of ANC Mpumalanga Provincial Chairperson and Premier David "DD" Mabuza, ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte and Free State ANC Provincial Chairperson and Premier Ace Magashule are on the alleged hit list that Mahumapelo mentioned at the press briefing.

He alleged that some leaders of the ANC alliance partner, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) are part of the plot to harm him.

Mahumapelo spoke out a day after an ANC Ward 13 councillor in Mahikeng Local Municipality, Ditebogo Molema, appeared in court on charges of intimidation. Molema is accused of sending death threats to Mahumapelo in a text message last month (July 2017).

"I have kept quiet for too long and I want to let the people know what is happening. I have been a political activist and ANC member for over 34 years and over this period I learnt how as ANC members we must be able to live and die with personal pain for the sake of the ANC. I did not want to look like a crybaby, but there are individuals who are plotting against me and want to silence me," he said.

"I want to urge them to refrain from that. Our main objective is to enhance the image of the ANC and ensure that we fulfill our mandate," the Provincial Chairperson said.

He confirmed that Councillor Ditebogo Molema appeared at Molopo Magistrate's Court in Mmabatho after he sent him death threats in a cellphone message, a message he shared with the media.

Molema was granted a R3000 bail and his case was postponed to 22 September 2017.

He further said he received another death threat during ANC National Policy Conference last month. He said the suspect, a Sonkie Yende, demanded to see him in Pretoria.

"I was called by a gentleman who goes by the name of Vusi before Yende demanded that we meet. Ultimately I reported the matter to law enforcement agencies and Yende was arrested. He disclosed who he is working with in a quest to harm me," Mahumapelo said.

The ANC Provincial Chairperson mentioned yet another case of a plot to kill him, this one again by his ANC comrade.

"You still remember another matter where former Mahikeng councillor, Gaasite Legalatladi was arrested after she tried to kill me? Then another matter happened eight years ago, where a man named Moiloa also threatened to kill me. He was also arrested and he indeed disclosed the senior politicians who sent him to do the dirty job. I also received death threats from a person in Vryburg, but he came to me and confessed. So, we agreed that I will not reveal his identity," he said.

Mahumapelo added that seven years ago, police in Klerksdorp called him and showed him a file with information that pointed to people wanting to assassinate him.

"Those who concoct things against us want to discredit us ahead of the ANC elective conference in December. They want to create a high level of anxiety and eventually kill us. However, we remain buoyed and urge them to refrain from that," he said.

ANC Provincial Secretary, Dakota Legoete, said the ruling party would take disciplinary action against Molema. Legoete also applauded law enforcement agencies for their swift response in arresting Molema.

"We cannot allow the situation where our cadres plot against our provincial leadership. We need to continue and abide by the law. I urge all those who are involved to desist from that. The public spat within the ANC must come to an end. The in-fights project the ANC in a bad light and all members of the ANC need not refrain from concocting stories against each other. We need to build unity and cohesion within the party," he said.

"Difference ideologies are welcome within the party. We however cannot allow those who use mechanism tools to settle political scores. Those disgruntled individuals are driven by jealousy," he said.

Legoete also said the ANC provincial leadership has taken a decision to fill the Member of Parliament (MP) position left vacant by Brian Molefe with former Rustenburg Local Municipality mayor, Matthews Wolmarans.

"He will be sworn in when Parliament resumes and we are content that Wolmarans will represent us well," he said.
