ANC BOKONE BOPHIRIMA CONDEMNS THE TORCHING OF MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS AND HOSTAGE SITUATION AT DITSOBOTLA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY

The African National Congress (ANC) in Bokone Bophirima condemns with the contempt that it deserves the use of violence by a group of residents in Ditsobotla Local Municipality that resulted in the unfortunate torching and damage of the municipal building in Lichtenburg last night (Wednesday 24 May 2017).

The ANC is also disturbed by a decision of this group - which includes a ward councillor - to hold the Mayor, Cllr Daniel Buthelezi, his protectors and other staff members hostage. Taking people hostage is a criminal act and no amount of unhappiness can justify that.

We consider these acts pure anarchy and we are as a party going to embark on disciplinary processes against the implicated councillor and all members of the ANC that were part of this group.

We applaud the South African Police Service for ensuring that all the people who were held hostage, including Mayor Buthelezi, were released unharmed and that the culprits are arrested in the early hours of this morning. The ANC also thanks emergency services that responded swiftly to extinguish the fire at the municipality building.

We urge the police to investigate and root out all elements that might have infiltrated the community. We also call on law abiding members of the communities who care about their infrastructure and believe in registering their concerns in a lawful manner, to isolate this small group of people whose aim is to destroy and cause chaos instead of building.

It is sad that when residents are unhappy with something they destroy the same properties that should be used to render services to them. While we recognise that there are service delivery challenges in the area, we can't condone acts of thuggery that led to yesterday's situation. The ANC calls for calm and would like to assure the communities that their concerns are being attended to.

Ditsobotla Local Municipality has been hard at work - supported by the task team of MECs appointed by Bokone Bophirima Premier Supra Mahumapelo a few weeks ago - to give attention to issues raised by communities. Regular feedback has been given to communities and we are shocked now that despite all these progressive efforts, a small group of people has chosen to use criminal ways to take advantage of communities' genuine concerns to push their own selfish agendas. We would like to humbly request community members not to be influenced and this requires that our communities isolate criminals.
