ANC BOKONE BOPHIRIMA MOURNS THE PASSING OF AHMED KATHRADA

The African National Congress (ANC) in Bokone Bophirima mourns the passing of Isithwalandwe/Seaparankwe Ahmed "Uncle Kathy" Kathrada, who died this morning in a hospital in Johannesburg.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Uncle Kathy's wife Comrade Barbara Hogan, the Kathrada family, the ANC and to the people of South Africa who we know valued his contribution to the democracy that we enjoy today. We wish them strength and comfort in this difficult time of loss.

We dip our revolutionary banner in honour of this great icon of our movement.

The youngest of the Rivonia Trialists, Kathrada was born here in Bokone Bophirima in Schweizer-Reneke, then part of the Western Transvaal. He has been involved in the struggle for freedom and equality with the ANC, the South African Indian Congress, the SACP and the ANC's then armed wing Umkhonto weSizwe.

The ANC and the country have lost a selfless leader, who always lived to put the people, the movement and South Africa first. Even in his elderly age, Uncle Kathy never ceased to care for and give direction to the movement and the country.

Uncle Kathy was a dedicated freedom fighter who continued his activism long after democracy was attained because he believed in teaching and sharing information about the struggles the country has gone through to be where it is today. His anti-racism work was a clear indication of how Uncle Kathy would not rest until the ideals that him and others fought for are fully achieved. We call on all South

Africans to continue fighting racism and inequality in his honour.

The ANC in Bokone Bophirima thanks Uncle Kathy for his contribution that we are certain will have a positive impact for many more years to come.

Robala ka kgotso Uncle Kathy.
