STATEMENT OF THE PEC ON THE OCCASION OF THE COMMEMORATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

The African National Congress (ANC) in Bokone Bophirima joins fellow South Africans as we commemorate Human Rights Day on 21 March 2017.

The ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) would like to use this impoprtant commemoration to call on the country's justice system to restore the human rights and dignity of our fellow comrades whose killings are yet to be resolved. We reaffirm our trust and belief in the judicial system of the Republic of South Africa, and other law enforcement agencies, and have got confidence that justice will be done in honour of our comrades Moss Phakoe, Oubuti Chika and Boiki Tlhapi, among others.

Today, 20 March 2017, marks the 31st year since the disappearance of Cde Boiki Tlhapi, in the hands of the Special Branch Police in Stilfontein in 1986. Cde Moss Phakoe was brutally killed outside his home in Rustenburg North in March 2009 and the alleged killers have since been acquitted after they appealed their case. Our plea to the law enforcement agencies is to reinvestigate and arrest the real culprits of this horrendous act.

Cde Oubuti Chika was also brutally killed only two days before the ANC 53rd Mangaung National Conference in December 2012. The alleged killers were also acquitted by the North Gauteng High Court on the 24th February 2017, after they appealed their sentencing. As the ANC in Bokone Bophirima we want to urge the police to find the real culprits and ensure successful prosecution.

We cannot commemorate and celebrate the 2017 Human Rights Day while the families of our fellow comrades are yet to find closure on the disappearance and senseless killing of their loved ones. We therefore call on all the law enforcement agencies to re-investigate all these atrocities as a true human rights gift to the affected families and the movement.
