Festive season message by ANC Bokone Bophirima Provincial Chairperson
16/12/2016

The festive season is upon us and the majority of our people across the length and breadth of our beautiful province, Bokone Bophirima, will be celebrating the birth of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ on Christmas Day as well as the New Year. On behalf of the African National Congress (ANC) in Bokone Bophirima I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the people of Bokone Bophirima a joyful Christmas and prosperous New Year.

During this time, we rejoice and thank our Lord Jesus Christ for having blessed all of our people throughout the year. However, as we celebrate Christmas and welcome the New Year, we should do so with great caution and avoid over-indulgence in alcohol and substance abuse. We call upon all our people to refrain from drinking alcohol and driving, as this leads to road fatalities. Drinking and driving is the main contributor to road deaths during the festive season. Our law enforcement agencies will be visible on all our roads throughout this season and will be tougher on all the wrongdoers. It remains the responsibility of all the road users to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and obey the rules of the road for the benefit of all our people.

We also call upon all the people of our province to take special care of the innocent children and the elderly as we have noticed that during the festive seasons, children and the elderly are neglected and abused. As we prepare for the year 2017, it is important to exercise caution when spending our hard earned money, so as to save for the re-opening of the new school term.

We must emphasise that the safety of our people throughout the year and during this upcoming festive season in particular is our number one priority and the ANC government will do the best we can to achieve that. However, government alone cannot fight lawlessness caused by over-indulgence in celebrations, alcohol and drugs. We call upon community-based organizations, churches and individuals to ensure that our province is safe for all its people and tourists alike.

It is common knowledge that Bokone Bophirima is one of the most beautiful provinces in South Africa, attracting tourists both locally and internationally through our rich cultural heritage, exquisite wildlife, beautiful floras and the warmth of our people. Equally important, we call our people to open their hearts to tourists and share the love, humility and kindness with all those who are visiting our province during this festive season.

We are a diverse people with multi-cultural and religious backgrounds. We should therefore acknowledge that we might not celebrate the birth of Christ in the same fashion. We therefore call upon our people to exercise the highest form of religious and cultural tolerance towards one another.

In a very special way, we would like to congratulate the matric class of 2016 and their teachers for all their hard work, which we believe will be rewarded when the results are released on 5 January 2017.

Let's also make sure that we are part of the 105th celebration of the ANC's birth that will be held at Orlando Stadium, Gauteng, where our President Cde Jacob Zuma will be addressing the nation. On behalf of the ANC in Bokone Bophirima, I wish you all the best during this festive season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
