ANC BOKONE BOPHIRIMA ENRAGED BY THE DISCOVERY OF THOUSANDS OF UNDERAGE MOTHERS IN RATLOU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY

The African National Congress in Bokone Bophirima is outraged at the revelation that more than 3 000 underage girls in the Ratlou Local Municipality are already mothers and scores more are pregnant. The youngest of these underage mothers is said to be only 12.

What infuriates us the most is that government representatives have established that the fathers of most of these babies are older men, making it clear that statutory rapes have been committed by several people.

We commend our deployees in government for acting swiftly to alert the police and ensure that cases of statutory rape are investigated.

We call on the law enforcement agencies to prioritise investigations on this matter because the protection of our children, especially girl children, is of utmost importance for a stable society.

Young people are supposed to concentrate on their education so as to build a better future, not raising children. As the ANC, we also would like to encourage our communities and families to report such incidents because they cannot be accepted as normal.

We also call on the Department of Social Development as well as Education to support these young mothers to pick up the pieces and get their lives back on track. Building their future is even more crucial now to avoid a situation where they give up on rebuilding their lives.
