ANC MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOMES OF THE JOINT MEETING OF THE ANC PEC, ANCWL, ANCYL, ANCVL AND MKMVA

The ANC PEC in Bokone Bophirima convened a joint meeting with the ANC Veterans' League, ANC Women's League, ANC Youth League and the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association at Embassy Hall in Mahikeng on Monday.

The objective of the meeting was to reflect on the ANC National Working Committee's decision after the Constitutional Court judgement on the powers of the Public Protector in relation to remedial action following the findings of an investigation into security ugrades at the private residence of ANC President Jacob Zuma, who is also State President.

The joint meeting of Bokone Bophirima ANC leadership structures has thus resolved that: We agree with the decision of the extended NWC meeting unconditionally.

We congratulate the extended NWC for refusing to tear the movement apart and for providing leadership against the enemies of the National Democratic Revolution, as well as those who are calling for the regime change and working tirelessly to overthrow the democratically elected government and its institutions like Parliament.

The ANC in Bokone Bophirima consistent with our upper structures welcomes the clarity provided by the Constitutional Court on the binding nature of the Public Protector's findings. This confirms the centrality of the constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

The Constitutional Court judgment does NOT declare that the President failed to fulfil his constitutional obligations as per the prayer of the opposition parties, nor does it call for Parliament to be dissolved. It is therefore not only opportunistic but counter revolutionary to the extreme for the opposition and other yawning individuals to call for the ANC to remove its President.

The Court further does NOT declare that the President perpetrated a serious violation of the Constitution or the law, committed a serious misconduct or shown any inability to perform the functions of his office - which could be used as Constitutional grounds for the removal of the President from office.

The joint meeting of the ANC and its leagues as well as the MKMVA has accepted that the President did not deliberately act inconsistently with the Constitution and we have welcomed his apology to the nation as the collective apology of the government and the ANC to the people of South Africa. We also congratulate and commend the people of South Africa who have understood that to err is human and commend President Zuma for humbling himself before our people.

The meeting noted that there are some serious organizational concerns that requires that we engage with our national leadership, which have arisen recently in the context of the conduct of some of the senior leaders of the organization in the ANC and Government.

It is our view and resolve that there is a programme of the opposition and other opportunists within and outside the country to overthrow the Government and we will mobilise our people as our last and only reliable weapon to defend the ANC and Government.

We will go to all our structures, alliance and civil society in the province to explain the decision of the extended NWC and the way forward of the organization in how to deal with the Constitutional Court judgement.

We call on all other provinces to refrain from making the ANC a quassi federal organization, by speaking outside the central position before we finalize the process of consultation with our branches and civil society.

We call on the religious fraternity to accept the apology of the President, in line with the core values of our beliefs and to stop behaving like hypocrites as others have done. We will engage them and they must engage the ANC instead of loudhailing and calling for the president to resign.

We further direct our structures, alliance partners, supporters of the ANC and electorate to focus on delivering the victory in the forthcoming 2016 Local Government Elections on 3 August 2016. Our special focus in this regard will be on retaining all the municipalities in the province and increasing our percentage of votes. We have resolved that our visit and engagement to branches will focus more on strengthening the organization, instilling discipline and raising the level of confidence of the people in the ANC instead of being side-tracked by discussions on whether the President must be recalled or not.
