ANC BOKONE BOPHIRIMA STATEMENT ON CRITICISM OF THE PREMIER'S PLAN TO EMPOWER PEOPLE OF THE PROVINCE'S VILLAGES
20/03/2016

The ANC in Bokone Bophirima notes with regret a statement by the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in our province, which accuses ANC provincial chairperson Comrade Supra Mahumapelo of making statements with "distasteful xenophobic undertones".

Sanco has got it completely wrong when it says Mahumapelo - our Provincial Chairperson who is also the provincial government's Premier - wants foreign nationals to look for alternative places for their businesses.

As the ANC, we understand the accurate version of events to be that traditional leaders raised concerns with the provincial government about the regulation of liquor licenses and tuckshops and in his response, Premier Mahumapelo mentioned the importance of looking into "ownership patterns of every business entity in a village". This because the provincial government planned to ensure that more local people owned tuckshops, so as to enable them to benefit from a partnership with Nafcoc that will see warehouses developed in every district of the province to help supply tuckshops with merchandise.

It is a fact that more and more tuckshops in our villages are being leased to foreign nationals and as the ANC we would like to see our people playing a more bigger role in this part of the economy. That however does not mean that when we empower our people we then push foreign nationals out.

"The ANC commends the provincial government's plans to assist local tuckshop owners to grow in partnership with big business. This is also part of growing the provincial economy in Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSD), an initiative that we expressed support for as the governing party," said Provincial Secretary Dakota Legoete.

"There is no intention to drive foreign nationals out of the province. Sanco as a civic movement should actually be the most active partner with government in ensuring that local communities grow economically," Legoete said.

"We appeal to Sanco not to use genuine efforts meant to uplift our village people for political point scoring. As the ANC's alliance partner, we expect Sanco to approach us where they need clarity instead of using media reports to reach conclusions," said Legoete.

The ANC does not get shocked when opposition parties like the DA go all out to distort our Provincial Chairperson's statements, but we expect Sanco as an organization that got into a partnership with the ANC, to approach things differently so that we together can achieve our crucial goals of developing communities.
